CLASSES DON’T MATTER

The first screen you’ll see when you hit «new game» in  Elden Ring  is the familiar class selection screen. It can be a difficult decision to make that theoretically locks you into one style of play. You could also argue that there is a better class in the Elden Ring, but for the most part that doesn’t really matter.

The prospect of Dex complete with two scimitars might be appealing to you now, but five hours later you may find the coolest giant sword you’ve ever seen or a spell that rains meteors from the sky and you can’t resist a jolt. It’s best to choose as large a class as possible to give you as much room for experimentation as you want.

WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING THAT IS IMPORTANT

This might sound pretty boring to the cool kids at school, but keeping a journal is extremely helpful when it comes to keeping track of all the new information you discover. Unless you’re meticulously following the pre-release story, having an index of important characters, places, and events mentioned is a great way to not get lost, especially when half of the main characters’ names seem to start with an ‘M’ or ‘God’.

Also, like map markers, it can be a handy way to remember things to come back to, or things that only happen at certain times of the day, allowing you to roam as you please.

DON’T BE STUBBORN WITH THE FINAL BOSS

We’ve all had those moments when it seems impossible to defeat a boss. You keep trying and trying to no avail, until you finally drop the controller and pause the game.

While it’s theoretically never been easier to bang your head against a boss-shaped wall due to convenient checkpoints outside of boss arenas, Elden Ring gives you the best chance to get out of there and do something completely different.

You will likely run into an Elden Ring boss early in the game that will put you in this situation, but the best part is that even the starting area is huge, giving you plenty of opportunities to level up, find better gear or just do something else you need, don’t die for 400 times.

USE INVOCATIONS

The last thing I’d like to know before playing Elden Ring, and something that will help you if you’re one of those who ignores the last tip, is that summoning Spirit Ashes is quite useful.

Summons get a bit of a bad rap, with the shouts of ‘GIT GUD’ (what better than complaining, come on) in your ear the moment your battle partner arrives, but they do expand a bit in Elden Ring. Not only do you have the traditional single-box summon signs outside of boss areas, but you now also have spirit ash summons, a reusable item that brings a wide variety of characters to fight by your side.
